GISC 412 – 2019
Exercise 2
Web page topic
To demonstrate potential applications of maps and geographic information in a web context, we ask you to develop a web page targeting at least one of the UN sustainability goals: https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable- development-goals/. A topic for your web page could be, for instance, the 4th goal “Good Health and Well Being”. You could research into malaria spatial distribution by putting an emphasis on the where and when of the disease distribution. However, you are free to propose another topic from the UN sustainability goals, or you may select another topic related to your own interest, but confirm with me first that it is ok.
Data
You should choose the data best fitting your topic. Thereis no restriction on the data you can use but remember that the source should be reliable. There are many open datasets available in the Internet or internally onthe UC shared drive. You should include all of you R code used to process the data in your final submission.
Web-map solution
One or more web-maps should be the core practical outcome of your web page. This is the main support that users should use to investigate and answer your questions related to your topic.
Spend some time on the Internet looking at existing web-map solutions and draft a paper sketch (see example to the left). You will use R Shiny to create the web page and map.
Your web site should go beyond a simple web- map. Ideally you should include at least the following elements:

• A section with background information on your topic.
• A section providing basic information on your data sources.
• A section with your web-map(s) (including interactive elements etc)
Deliverables
Create a zip file of your directory that includes your Shiny app, any additional R scripts you developed, and any necessary input data files needed to run your web site. Upload the zip file to the Dropbox for Exercise 2 on Learn.
