Accessing the Oracle Database from home
Author: Laurie Benkovich, Lecturer

Overview
You can access the Oracle Database relatively easy from home using SQLDeveloper. I have included the instructions, together with screen shots to illustrate the process. What do you need?
You need to download  Putty
 SQLDeveloper client Software
You will need to have an Oracle account on the database at the university
A valid FEIT account on Rerun
Install the downloaded SQLDeveloper client software into a suitable folder.
Remember, you won’t be able to connect to Oracle until you set up putty for tunnelling
How does it work?
When you start a tunnelling session with putty you are in installing a listener that listens for any traffic destined for the port that has been defined for the tunnel. In my case, that’s port 5554. Any request to that port will be captured and tunnelled to the destination that has been set up. In my example that destination is oralab.it.uts.edu.au on port 1522 (that’s the port that Oracle is listening on Oralab)
Once the connection is established, putty will divert all traffic destined for the nominated port on the local host to the configured destination.
Setting up Putty to tunnel to Rerun
Create a putty session and give the session a suitable name
Things to note of the Screen Print
 Ensure the session is a SSH session
 Select port 22
Under the category frame, go to Connection then SSH and select tunnels
Select a port that is free on your PC. In the example I chose 5554. It is unlikely that any application will be using this port but you never know.
Enter the port number in the ‘source port’ text field
In the destination field enter oralab.it.uts.edu.au:1522. Ensure that the Local and auto radio buttons are enabled.
Click the add button. You will see the text field updated with the values that you nominated
Save the session so that you can recall it in the future.
Now open the session
If you have done everything right a connection will be established with Rerun. You will be prompted for a username and password. Log in and minimise the window

If you are using SQLDeveloper make sure that you select the ‘basic’ Connection type.
Note: The tunnel putty session must be active and logged-in in order to initiate a session
