SYS 5404 Project – Pattern Recognition Using FFT
Developed and Assigned by Prof. Edward Gu for the Fall 2019 Class
The objective of this computer project is to practice the FFT programming and process/recognize a set of mechanical tools from a 2D image, as shown in Figure. The detailed procedure is given as follows:
1. Define a number of pixels (about 16 or a little more) along the outer contour of each tool and find their x-y coordinates (you may use a grid paper or drawing software);
2. Determine the geometrical center (GC) of each tool and then find the distances of all the pixels with respect to the GC for each individual tool;
3. Now you have 16 (or a little more) numbers to form a signal sequence x[n] for each tool, and then find its frequency spectrum through FFT in either Matlab or other software packages;
4. Define your criteria to allow the machine to learn and recognize each tool from the given 2D non-overlapped image; Can you do the same for an overlapped image?
5. You may also define your own signal sequence to be FFT-processed for each tool in a different way, as long as you would be able to find a set of clear criteria to uniquely and more effectively recognize the tools from each other, and more preferably to be independent of both scaling and orientation changes for each tool on the image.
You can work on this project either individually or in a group of at most two people. The report from each group should include an introduction, theory, modeling, analysis, computer code and plots of both time-domain sequence and frequency spectrum for each tool image, as well as your criteria for the pattern recognition, discussions and conclusion.
