Installing and Configuring the WDS Role

In this project you will:
You will install the Windows Deployment Services Role and experiment with remotely installing a windows 10 image with a basic WDS implementation.

Step 1:Installing WDS Role (Server)
Start your server and log on as Administrator with the password 80A$tudent. Server
Manager opens automatically.
Click Manage, Add Roles and Features from the menu to start the Add Roles and Features Wizard. In the Before You Begin window, click Next.
In the Installation Type window, click Next. In the Server Selection window, click Next again.
In the Server Roles window, scroll down and click the Windows Deployment Services check box. Click Add Features, and then click Next.
In the Features window, click Next. The WDS window describes WDS and lists the prerequisites for installing it. Read this information, and then click Next.
The Role Services window shows the two role services you can install: Deployment Server and Transport Server. Leave the check boxes next to both role services selected, and then click Next.
In the Confirmation window listing your installation selections for review, click Install.
The Results window shows a progress bar for the installation. Wait for the installation to finish, and then click Close.
Open the Windows Deployment Services console by clicking Tools, Windows Deployment Services from the Server Manager menu.
Click to expand Servers in the left pane. A yellow caution triangle is shown on the server icon, indicating that you have to configure WDS before you can use it. You use the configuration wizard in the next activity.

Step 2:Configuring Windows Deployment Services (Server)
In the WDS console, click to expand Servers, if necessary. Right-click your domain name this is the name of the domain given to you in Lab 1and click Configure Server.
In the Before You Begin window, read the requirements for WDS, and then click Next.
In the Install Options window, be sure Integrated with Active Directory is selected, and then click Next.
In the Remote Installation Folder Location window, accept the default C:RemoteInstall, and then click Next. In the System Volume Warning message box, click Yes.
In the Proxy DHCP Server window, accept the default selections by clicking Next.
In the PXE Server Initial Settings window, click the Respond to all client computers (known and unknown) option button. You can change this option later to improve security. Click Next.
WDS configuration begins, and you’re shown a Task Progress window. After configuration is completed, click Finish.
In the WDS console, look at your server name. If a green triangle icon is displayed next to it, the WDS service started successfully, and you can go to the next step. If it shows a black square icon, the service didn’t start. In this case, right-click the server, point to All Tasks, and click Start. You should see the message “Successfully started Windows Deployment Services.” Click OK.

Step 3: Viewing WDS Server Properties (Server)
WDS should already be open from the previous step. If necessary, click Tools, Windows Deployment Services from the menu to open the WDS console.
Click to expand the Servers node, if necessary. Right-click your server name and click Properties. You see the General tab (shown in the following section).
Click each tab, and read the information in it. Take your time reviewing this information so that you have a good idea of where to configure different aspects of WDS. When you’re finished reviewing these tabs, click Cancel.

Step 4: Adding a Boot image to WDS (Server)
An ISO image of Windows7 is available on the 80dell server in the MIT403 a shortcut has been created for you if you click Start then File Explorer. Copy the ISO file to your desktop then from your workstation desktop to your Servers E: Drive images folder right-click the .iso file in File Explorer and click Mount (a new feature in Windows Server 2012/R2).
Open the WDS console, if necessary.
Click to expand the Servers node, if necessary, and then click to expand on your sever name.
Right-click Boot Images and click Add Boot Image to start the Add Image Wizard. In the Image File window, click Browse.
In the Select Windows Image File window, browse to the F drive images folder where you mounted the Windows 10 ISO file. Open the sources folder and click boot.wim. Click Open.
Click Next. In the Image Metadata window, you can type a descriptive name for the image and a description, or you can accept the default values. Accept the default values, and then click Next.
In the Summary window, click Next. The image is added to the Boot Images folder. Windows must copy boot.wim from the images folder to the RemoteInstall folder. Click Finish to return to the WDS console. The boot image is shown in the right pane.
To see the possible actions you can take on the boot image, right-click it. The menu shows options for actions such as viewing the images properties; disabling the image, exporting the image, and creating capture and discover images. Press Esc to close this menu.

Step 5: Testing a Boot Image (Server and VMware Workstation)

In VMware go to the Home tab then click Create a new Virtual Machine then select I will install the operating system later click Next.
Select Windows 7 x64 for the version and click Next.
Use the default name for the name of the machine then click Next.
Create a folder on your external hard drive and then browse to choose this location then click Next.
Change the Maximum disk size to 20 and select Store virtual disk as a single file then click Next.
In the Ready to Create Virtual Machine window select Customize Hardware then click Network Adapter and select Bridged then finally click Finish.
Start WDSclient in VMware by clicking Power on this virtual machine then press F12 to activate the boot menu. When a network boot has been initiated, you should see the screen shown in the figure below.

If you missed the prompt, restart the server and be ready to press F12 when you see the prompt. You see a message showing the progress of downloading boot.wim.

After boot.wim is loaded, Windows Setup begins. You see a window asking for locale and keyboard settings (see Figure below You can accept the default settings or change them as needed for your location. Click Next.
Next, you’re prompted for domain credentials. In the User name text box, type [email protected], and in the Password text box, type 80A$tudent. Click OK.
The last window of Windows Setup is where you normally select an OS to install. Because you haven’t added an installation image, you see a window indicating that no OS image is available.
At this point, you know that your basic WDS configuration works; power off your client computer.

Step 6: Creating a Capture Image (Server)
Open the WDS console. If necessary, click to expand the Servers node and click to expand Yourdomain.com.
Click the Boot Images folder, if necessary. In the right pane, right-click the Microsoft Windows Setup boot image you added in Step 4 and click Create Capture Image. The Create Capture Image Wizard starts.
In the Metadata and Location window (see Figure below), type Capture Image in the Image name text box. In the Image description text box, type Capture and create a custom install image. In the Location and file name text box, type C:RemoteInstallCapture.wim, and then click Next.

The Task Progress window shows the progress of creating the capture image, which can take several minutes. When the process is finished, click the Add image to the Windows Deployment Server now check box to move the image to the WDS image store. Click Finish.
The Add Image Wizard starts. In the Image File window, accept the path to the image and click Next. Click Next in the Image Metadata window.
Click Next in the Summary window. In the Task Progress window, click Finish when the task is completed. The WDS management console window updates and displays the new image in the Boot Images folder. The next time you PXE boot a client, a menu shows both boot images, and you can select Capture Image when you want to capture an OS installation or the Microsoft Windows Setup image when you want to install from an installation image.

Make sure I check your work and your mark sheet is completed and handed in.
