Assignment 1: Draw a meme in DrRacket

This assignment is due on Wednesday, 1/10 at 11:59 PM. Submit it using the handin server as assignment a1.

1Sign up for Piazza

Our primary means of communication and answering questions will be the course Piazza message board. Sign up for this, and post introducing yourself.

2Download and install DrRacket

If you’ll be using your own computer for any of the work in C211, you need to install DrRacket. You can download it here. It’s available for any platform you might want. If you have trouble installing it, post on Piazza.

3Install the C211 Plugin

To use the Handin Server in DrRacket, you’ll need to install a plugin in your DrRacket. To do that,

• Open DrRacket.
• In the File menu, choose “Install .plt file”
• In the dialog, enter the following URL: http://www.cs.indiana.edu/classes/c211/c211-handin.plt
• Restart DrRacket.

When DrRacket starts again, you should have a button with the IU logo. To create an account, go to the Filemenu and choose Manage C211 Handin Account. Then you can create a new account.

Important Make sure that your user name is the same as your IU email user name.

4Read the Web site

Read all the pages on this Web site and familiarize yourself with the course policies.

5Create a program that produces a meme

• Open up DrRacket, and choose the “Beginning Student Language”.
• Start using the 2htdp/image library, as described in the Prologue of the book. Read all the way to where images are discussed!

  According to the book, you can either “add ( require 2htdp/image )to the definitions area, or select Add Teachpackfrom the Languagemenu.” Don’t Add Teachpack, because it doesn’t fit how we grade homeworks in this course. Instead, add ( require 2htdp/image )to the definitions area.

• Using this library, create a program that produces a meme when you hit the “Run” button. A meme is a funny picture with text on it. Grab a picture from the Internet or draw it yourself, then add text on top of it using the 2htdp/image library. Feel free to post your meme to Piazza if it’s good.
• Submit the file for the first homework, labeled a1 , using the Handin Server.

Note There’s a maximum upload size for an acceptable submission to Handin: 7 MB. Be sure that any image that you’ve included in your file is small enough (you may need to rescale it in an image editor).
